Hiring rules in the Boston area
Job listings pick where the work is. The rules there decide when pay shows and which notices appear. Matching and ranking never read them.
| Item | Pay range | Also |
|---|---|---|
| Elsewhere in Massachusetts | Shown on the listing and the card (employers with 25 or more employees). | Background-check badges show only after an offer (fair-chance law). |
| Elsewhere in New Hampshire | Hidden on both sides. Ranges only have to be close to match. | Federal rules only, beyond pay. |
Compiled from state and local sources as of Nov 2, 2026. Research, not legal advice; employers should confirm with counsel.
Laws we follow here
- Massachusetts CORI reform: not on the initial written application (from 2010-11-04)
- Massachusetts pay transparency act: range in postings (from 2025-10-29)
- Massachusetts: salary-history ban (from 2018-07-01)
Federal rules apply everywhere. Pay history is never asked, in any state.
