Find a mentor · Be a mentor

The person who's done it, ten minutes away.

A 25-year superintendent and a new assistant super. An architect who started a firm and one thinking about it. Mentoring matches pair someone with more experience and someone who wants it, on the topics that matter to both.

Two sides, one match

If you want a mentor

  • Pick what you want help with: career advice, skills in your field, starting a business, leading people, or a sounding board.
  • Pick the field you want guidance in. It can be your own or the one you're moving toward.
  • Say how often you'd like to meet: weekly, monthly or as needed.

If you want to mentor

  • Pick what you can offer from the same list, and how much time you can give.
  • Add up to 3 fields beyond your own you're willing to mentor in.
  • You're always the more experienced side of the match. Mentors cover the coffee by default.

How it works

Matched on how you work together

Mentees answer how they like to get feedback, check-ins and direction. Mentors answer how they give them. The two are compared pair by pair. More

The mentor goes first

At the meetup, anything personal starts with the mentor. It makes it easier for the newer person to speak up.

Keeps going if it works

Mark it "Working together" and the relationship continues outside the queue, with a check-in at two months.

Questions

Do I need to be an expert to mentor?

No. You need more experience than the person you're matched with, and the time for an occasional meeting.

Can I mentor outside my own field?

Yes. Mentors pick their own profession and up to 3 others they're willing to mentor in.

How many mentees will I get?

One new match at a time. When a mentoring relationship is working, it carries on outside the queue, so you can mentor several people over time without being swamped.

Is it free?

Yes, for both sides, always.
