Zydeby Work vs. Mentoring programs
Mentoring programs: formal programs that pair mentors and mentees, from company programs to SCORE. Here's what the two have in common, where they differ, and when Mentoring programs is the better choice.
What they have in common
Free mentoring
Like SCORE, mentoring here is free for both sides.
Experienced volunteers
Mentors give their time because they want to help someone coming up.
Where they differ
Matched on how you work together
We match on topics and on how the mentee likes feedback, check-ins and direction against how the mentor gives them.
Any field, any stage
Not only small-business owners or one company's employees: any occupation, and mentors can mentor in up to 3 fields beyond their own.
Starts in person
The first meetup is side by side, and the relationship keeps going outside the queue if it works.
Row by row
| Item | Mentoring programs | Zydeby Work |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Company, association and nonprofit programs that pair mentors and mentees (SCORE is a well-known free one for small businesses) | Blind, one-at-a-time matching for hiring, project work and networking, ending in an in-person meetup |
| How you find people | A program coordinator or a request form matches you | One match at a time, picked for fit both ways |
| What the other side sees first | Names and backgrounds up front | Fit labels, experience and vouch counts. No name, photo, age or gender until both say yes |
| Before you meet | Meetings, calls or video, as the pair decides | No chat. Both decide privately; the meetup is planned with taps |
| Meeting in person | Varies by program; often virtual | Every match ends in an in-person meetup with a short activity |
| Cost | Often free to mentees; SCORE is free, through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration | Free for members. Employers pay 1% of typical salary on a confirmed hire; projects $99–$1,999 on award |
When Mentoring programs is the better choice
If you work for a company with a strong internal program, or you want structured small-business advice with workshops and templates, those programs are worth using. Nothing stops you using both.
